People often ask me about my opinion of fruit and I always tell them if you are serious about fat loss then you simply have to cut right back on the fruit in your diet.


The reason?

Well, some fruits are absolutely packed with sugar, I understand that fruits contain fibre, vitamins, etc, but with the large amounts of sugar that fruit contains means that it is a very calorically dense food with sometimes little in return by the way of nutrients.

The modern Western diet of soda drinks, chips, chocolate, candy, alcohol, pizza, pasta, bread etc all contain lots of sugar, when you swap these “foods” out for lots of fruit in your new healthier diet all your body sees is more sugar, and it carries on as if nothing happened.


Sugar from fruit is different right?

Nope. Sugar is sugar is sugar. It doesn’t matter where it comes from, it still is a huge source of calories that can be stored as fat easily. Whether it is from fructose, sucrose, an apple, honey or a piece of chocolate cake, the sugar still has the same effect.

If you think back to times before modern agriculture, then fruit would only be available when ripe in the late summer and early fall, humans and animals alike would gorge themselves on it, why? Well the answer would be to put on as much body fat as possible to use through the winter fruitmonths when food is scarce, so now with modern farming and transport links we can do this all year round. Also most modern fruits like bananas, strawberries, apples, etc have been farmed over the years to be bigger, sweeter and more appealing than their forebears, thus they contain more sugar than ever before.

My message is to not overeat on fruit! There are a handful of low GI fruits that are great for you! Tomato's, avocados, lemons, limes, grapefruit and most dark berries are all ok and full of goodness and the darker the skin the more antioxidants.

Personally, I do eat a little fruit, a few times per week, but I really concentrate on getting my nutrients from fresh vegetables instead, yes veggies have lots of vitamin C and other vitamins and minerals in them too!


Sure, I would eat fruit instead of a candy bar or other unhealthy snacks – but my point is don’t look at fruit as a ‘free-for-all’ that you can eat as much as you like of, remember it is very high in sugar and can slow your weight loss progress.
